BOYS' ROOMS

Given their natural energy levels, boys need ample space to play, furniture to climb on and robust surfaces. Those are the basic, yet boys are also sensitive to style, so ask about their favourite colors, too. The bed is the mainstay of any boy's room, but try to make it as exciting as possible. Choose a bunk bed or platform bed with desk and computer underneath. Ladders, ropes or mini slides all add play opportunities. Older boys may prefer a classic bed style from a wooden sleigh bed to an iron school-style bedstead, or an army canvas camp bed.

Keep remaining furniture to a minimum, so even a small room has play space. Wall-mounted shelves and hooks for clothes will take the place of a wardrobe. While a hard floor, from wood boards to rubber, makes a better surface than carpet for toy cars. Boys need decent storage to make clothes and toy tidying easy. Choices might include: oxo-style open shelves, furnished with mini crates. Wicker baskets on the floor make a great instant storage for bulkier clothing items such as sweaters and shoes.

Don't be swayed into decorating a boy's room in the latest cartoon craze as he will grow up soon. A generic theme can endure for several years and will please younger boys. Don't spend much money, and you won't mind decorative changes when the time comes.
